No show next week, kids. The Man is sending me to NYC for a few days. If you recall, the last time that The Man sent me to NYC, I got to see Big Star. So who's playing there this time? The Beebz at MSG. Exciting, yes, but not quite the same.

Show #63: Yolk Of The Dumbwish

Sometimes I wish I had named the show Shake Appeal. Wouldn't that be a great name for a show? I love that song so much it is downright stupid. I got my $5 Stooges book in the mail this week and it is kick ass. SO many great pictures, but my favorite is this live shot from the famous peanut butter show in Cincinnati:

Calling All Geezers

(many more awesome early Knox band flyers at Lynnpoint Records)

So a month or so ago, I did that all-SST show, right? Well it got me all misty-eyed about back in tha day when I would construct elaborate lies so I could, say, go see Black Flag on a Tuesday night.

And that got me all misty-eyed about all the Knoxville bands that I loved back when I was a fresh-faced teen.

And then somebody called me up at the station wanting to hear some old school Nashville punk rawk.

And I thought, why not do a show devoted to homegrown punk-type rock? I'll probably do it a coupla weeks from now as I'm still gathering tunes.

Which brings me to my point: if you have any Nashville/Knoxville/Chattanooga 80s/early90s stuff you wanna send me, shoot me an email. I'd love to have it.

Especially if you were in Bloo Shrooms.

Show #62: Way Out West

Yesterday, Big Star bassist Andy Hummel died at his home in Weatherford, Texas. He had battled cancer for a couple of years.

I gotta come clean: I've always hated The India Song. I skip it every time I listen to Radio City--just ask the hub. But I love Way Out West, which Andy wrote and which Jody sings. It contains one of my favorite lyrics: "Love me, we can work out the rest." Beautiful.

I knew that Andy Hummel lived in Texas, but I didn't realize he lived in Weatherford. My grandparents lived in Odessa and every summer we'd drive from Tennessee to West Texas to visit them. We'd always stop in Weatherford to eat breakfast at Jack's. They had the BEST blueberry pancakes. Wonder if Andy ever ate there with his kids? Wonder if Jack's is even still there? Anyway, 59 is way too young to be leaving. Safe travels, Andy Hummel.

Today's show was an abbreviated one since I had a 9 a.m. meeting. Being a grownup? Not all it's cracked up to be.
